WordPress Backups: UpdraftPlus Plugin

Step 1: Install the UpdraftPlus Plugin

  1. Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard (https://yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
  2. In the left sidebar, go to Plugins → Add New.
  3. In the search bar at the top right, type “UpdraftPlus”.
  4. Find “UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin” (by UpdraftPlus.Com, DavidAnderson) and click Install Now.
  5. Once it installs, click Activate.

Step 2: Open the UpdraftPlus Settings

  1. After activation, you’ll see a new menu item:
Settings → UpdraftPlus Backups (or sometimes directly under the top bar).
  2. Click it — this is where you’ll manage all your backups.

Step 3: Choose Your Remote Storage (optional but recommended)

By default, UpdraftPlus will store backups on your server, but that’s risky if your site or host goes down.
To safely store them offsite:

  1. In the Settings tab of UpdraftPlus, find the section “Choose your remote storage”.
  2. You can pick one of the free options:
    • Google Drive Choose this one and connect to our Umbrella Google Drive.
    • Dropbox
    • Amazon S3
    • Microsoft OneDrive
    • Email (sends a copy via email — not ideal for large sites)
  3. Click your preferred storage option (for example, Google Drive).
  4. Scroll down and click Save Changes.
  5. After saving, a prompt appears to authorize the connection — click the link and complete the authorization.
  6. When done, you’ll be returned to WordPress and see a success message.

Step 4: Set Up Automatic Backups

  1. Still on the Settings tab, find the “Files backup schedule” and “Database backup schedule” sections.
  2. Set both to something like:
    • Files backup schedule: Daily or Weekly
    • Database backup schedule: Daily
  3. Under “Retain this many scheduled backups,” choose 2 or 3 (keeps recent backups, deletes old ones).
  4. Click Save Changes again.

Step 5: Run a Manual Backup (first time)

  1. Go to the Backup / Restore tab (the first tab).
  2. Click the big blue “Backup Now” button.
  3. In the pop-up:
    • Make sure Include your database and Include your files are checked.
    • Click Backup Now.
  4. Wait a few minutes — once it’s done, you’ll see the backup listed below with options to Restore, Download, or Delete.
  5. Download all components of the backup: Database, Plugins, Themes, Uploads, and Others.
  6. Upload each .ZIP archive file to Umbrella Shared Drive “Client Information” > “- Backups [Files]” > “WordPress Updraft Backups”
